Shopping for Goalkeeper Equipment
In football, the last defender of the goal post is goalie. Because of this, he has all the pressure, as well as movement, including jumps and dashes. Although he wears similar gear as the other players, he needs more protection from impact of the ground and the weather.
In shopping for goalkeeper equipment, take note of the following:
Shirts
- Different colour from your team's uniform
- Long-sleeved and comfortable
- May or may not be padded for protection
Pants
- Usually padded on the hips to protect from falls
- Shorts that go below the knees or long pants
- Cycling shorts is worn underneath
- Waist should be a good fit so that it does not come off when you are jumping for the ball.
Gloves
- Gloves wear off easily so it might be better to buy a cheaper one for practice and use an expensive one for actual games.
- It is not advisable to buy these from online shops because you need to try them on first.
- They should be at least one size bigger than what actually fits your hand.
- Check for grip, durability, cushioning, wrist support, comfort and fit. If one brand fails, you can try another one at a future time.
Caps or Hats (on special conditions)
- A bicycling cap is recommended or any cap that stays on your head even while you are jumping and running around. But before the game, make sure you ask the referee if they allow it.
You do not need knee and elbow pads because they limit your speed and movement. Improve your technique if you keep scraping your knees and elbows, and learn to calculate your fall better. Use regulated gear like shin guards and cleats properly to avoid injury.
